Building a Snail Paradise In The Heart of Texas
Today marks an exciting milestone for Mama Kuku’s Homestead as we share the very beginning of our journey: "Zero To Snail Paradise".
When I first visited the property, everything (except the termites and rodents and frog infestation) fit like a glove. My mother was understandably terrified for me. “Are you sure about this?”.
But I saw the future home of thousands of snails, a haven for permaculture, and the physical manifestation of the Mama ke ukwu I've been dreaming about. Get hooked on the first chapter of our extraordinary journey, right here in the Cattle Capital of the world - Texas!
Now, I know what you're thinking—"Snails? In Texas?" It sounds crazy, right? Well, that's just the beginning of the madness because I have absolutely zero experience in construction or really anything related to what we're about to undertake. But, who needs experience when you have the most amazing family, friends, and determination, right?
Our ambitious project requires major infrastructure changes:
Rainwater catchment and irrigation systems to keep our slimy friends happy and hydrated
Renovating the existing barn and farmhouse
Using heavy equipment like bulldozers and skid steers (which, did I mention, I've never operated before?)
In this video, you'll see the raw, dilapidated land and house that will soon become a gastropod paradise. Why am I doing this? Because sometimes the most cuckoo ideas lead to the most amazing innovations. We're not just building a snail farm; we're pioneering a new way of sustainable farming in an unexpected place.
